About

Sculpture / Film / TV

I am a landscape architect and I live in central Auckland. I am interested in how development sits within the natural processes of our landscapes; the protection maintenance, and enhancement of our more unique landscapes; and the design of  sculptural public spaces and public art.

For the past three years, I have been working for local government assessing development within a legislative planning framework. Previously, I have worked creating conceptual garden designs and worked as a contractor where I contributed to projects such as feasibility studies, greenways and connections plans, proposals, strategies, and guides through research, map-making, and writing.

I come from an arts background having worked for several years in the art department for film and television - making models, miniatures, set painting, and prop-making. I have a huge love of the arts and sculpture is my main hobby.

ABOUT

LA—Residential + Commercial

PROJECTS

Conceptual Landscape Design

2024

To create conceptual landscape design for small - medium sites I use a dialed-down site analysis approach, compared to large public sites. I focus on how people move about and intend to use their site, along with recommendations for hardscaping materials and plant species (both exotic and native) that are compatible with each location.

The following images are taken from previous concept residential and commercial designs.

LA—ASSESSMENT

Specialist LA for Auckland Council

2021-2024

I have worked for the last three years as a Specialist Landscape Architect at Te Kaunihera / Auckland Council in the Tāmaki Makaurau Design Ope. My role included reviewing development applications within a legislative planning framework. Proposed development was of varying types and scale and I wrote corresponding reports regarding the effects of the proposals on the surrounding landscape character. Development and assessment of landscape character was throughout the Auckland Region and included urban,

rural, coastal environments, outstanding natural landscapes, significant ecological areas, and outstanding natural features. I represented Te Kaunihera in various settings, such as pre-application meetings, Urban Design Panels, and Te Kaunihera / Council hearings.

LA—STUDIO

Resilio Studio

2019-2020

Resilio Studio is a landscape architecture practice that focuses on landscape and urbanism, social innovation, architectural design, and education. Working for Resilio studio involved researching, community events, writing, and mapping for projects such as feasibility reports, greenways and connections plans, proposals, strategies and guides.

UNDERGRAD STUDIES

Unitec,  Bachelor of Landscape Architecture

The fourth year of the Unitec BLA required the students to complete a conceptual plan of any area of landscape architecture that inspired them. Whaitua O Horotiu is an urban design project that investigated the sealed up WWII air raid shelter tunnels under Rangipuke/Albert Park. The analysis looked at the potential for the tunnels to be used as a cross-city, light rail passage that could join the Ponsonby to Parnell. A key feature of the project was to reinstate Waipapa market on the same Beach Road site as the previous Māori Waipapa hostel and market. This project won the Unitec  2018 Land Lab - Urban Design Award.

2017 The 2017 ‘Collaborate’ issue of X section is the seventh issue of the student-led Unitec magazine. The magazine features contributions from international and domestic industry professionals, academic peer-reviewed papers, and student work that has been well received by their tutors and companions.

X-Section Collaborate was a joint effort by Pip Walls and Alex Luiten of Landscape and Ecology, Danyon Robertson and Woody Clayton.

2015-2018

FILM & TELEVISION

Art Department

2000 onwards

I have worked as a prop-maker and as art assist on varying films, television, and commercials. Working in film and television is not a new venture as I began with freelance make-up, moved into working as a prosthetic technician at Weta Workshop for Lord of the Rings, then onto model making for Lord of the Rings. I shifted into prop-making and set-painting for King Kong, and onto several television, theatre productions and commercials.

SCULPTURAL STUDIES

Portraits

Sculptural studies of figures is my happy place. I am currently creating figurative pieces toward an exhibition. I use clay, bronze, and paint. Some of these are works in progress, or half of an intened work.
